One of the classic movie theaters of Chicago. Doesn't show movies anymore. Used to have lots of live entertainment running around my feet during movies here. Shall be nameless. Photo from Wikipedia.
Most of the movies I own I bought to keep my children from driving me insane. Before they got laptops.
Twelve movies I can watch almost anywhere, anytime.1. Hunt for Red October. Sean Connery and a still skinny Alec Baldwin. Is that Sam Neill playing the Russian doctor?? And Scott Glenn just blending into the background.
2. Duck Soup. This was not a hit for the Marx Brothers, but it is their funniest and oddest achievement.
3. Men in Black. Just as strange and wrong and right after a hundred viewings.
4. Star Wars. The one. Probably The Empire Strikes Back is a better movie, but you can watch this one forever.
5. The Thin Man. The whole series is great, but this one has the best one-liners in the greatest concentration.
6. The Blues Brothers. This homage to Chicago in the form of blowing up as much of it as possible is still irreverent and funny.
7. I Know Where I'm Going (1945). This obscure movie set in the Hebrides Islands on the Scottish coast is just outrageously romantic and atmospheric. Finally out on DVD just a couple of years ago.
The whole movie is filmed in this dreamy black and white. Directed by Michael Powell. 8. Bladerunner. For the sets, for a really hunky lead actor.
9. Bandwagon. The best musical ever made. Fred Astaire. They said he was too old, too short, and too bald, but they hadn't seen him move or act.

12. Marnie. Just watch Sean Connery in this movie. He's fallen in love with the most screwed-up woman he's ever met. Wonderfully corny Freudian stuff.
By the way, Paul Newman's microwave popcorn is the best.

Fay--I love both Casino Royale and Casino Royale! One is funny satire from the 1960s and the other is just sex and violence and sex and spies and sex and naked James Bond!!!
When my son was about ten he watched The Hunt for Red October over and over again. He also loved the James Bond movies, and we both love the new Bond -- and Casino Royale.

I saw 'I Know Where I'm Going' a couple of years ago and it was totally charming. Love 'Duck Soup', and even my teenaged daughter loved 'The Thin Man.' But you won't believe the dirty looks I get when I say that I hated 'Star Wars.'

I would love to see "I know Where I'm Going" especially as the photo shows Wendy Hillary sp? for whom I was named. (Don't know what my lower middle class Jewish parents were thinking as Pigmalian's WendyH from 1937--was a literal Dame. But then, pure coincidence , I named my daughter for Audrey Hepburn's character in "My Fair Lady"... an aside, I know. Rated.

Hey nola. Glad to see someone giving credit to Duck Soup. It's my fave of the Marx Bros and the Fredonia's Going To War scene cracks me up every time out. Hats off too for The Thin Man plug. Very clever stuff.

Wendy! Named after Wendy Hiller! That's so cool. The picture shows how she could just "Glow" in a picture--although I think she was mostly on stage. The movie I Know Where I'm Going is now available on DVD--long overdue! I saw this movie in the early 1980s on tv--maybe a PBS station and it was so great. And then it seemed like it had never existed until recently when TCM premiered it! TCM--be ashamed, be VERY ashamed. It's a romantic comedy--with WWII and Scots and an incredible setting that inspired the director/writer. And it's all about wanting to be rich and safe and protected and snobbish and finding out that this is a poor, thin excuse of an ambition! Not socialist, but realism. It's one of those movies that all black and white movie fans should see. Thanks for visiting.

Great list! Paul Newman's chocolate chip cookies are a favorite in my house. They should put that picture on the bag and they'd double their sales!
I'm concurring about Newman...and now I want to see I Know Where I'm Going. Can't say the others on are on my list...but then I don't have a list :)
